good morning from washington. it's thursday, december 13, 2012. this is "the daily rundown," i'm chuck todd. the only reason we can't saturday fiscal cliff negotiations have fallen apart is that the two sides are still talking. but things are bad, make no mistake. and neither side is optimistic that anything can get done at all. with congress and the president careening to the edge of the cliff, the public is ignoring party lines and demanding an end to this mess. 70% of democrats, 59% of republicans want their own party's leaders to come to an agreement, even if it means not sticking to long-held positions on taxes and entitlements and yet despite those demand, the country is evenly divided on whether they think a consensus can be worked out here in washington, whether they believe obama and boehner can strike a deal. interestingly folks that are paying more attention to the fiscal cliff story are more pessimistic. it's the folks paying less attention that are more optimistic. judging by what we're hearing from negotiators, the public clearly kno

from washington our investigative correspondent live at newtown high school. let me start with you, pete. what's the latest on the investigation and the question that investigators said they will tell us at some point which is how closer are we to knowing why? >> not much that i know of, chuck. they had been hopeful that they could extract some information from the computers that he had in the home. he was very into computers, they say. he was very socially with drawn. he was very engaged with computers. they say before he left his mother's house on the morning that he shot and killed her while she was sleeping, he damaged extensively his computers that he took the hard drive out and tried to tamper with the inside of it and pulled the disk out and did a lot of damage to it. it's not clear whether they will be able to extract information and they will try their best and there is hope they will find something. there was no letter or note left behind. he was not someone who apparently was involved in social media. he didn't post things on websites or chat rooms.

this is a clear attempt on the part of the republican leadership to punish those in washington who vote the way they promised their constituents they would. conservative blogger eric erickson on his blog writing on the same day john boehner, eric cantor and kevin mccarthy punished those for standing up for their convictions sold out their own convictions. erickson wasn't the only 0 group. calling it an $800 billion tax hike. the most conservative media outlets have been in boehner's camp, conservative organizations have a lot of sway with some members. bane earp does not want a full fledged rebellion. a few things to keep in mind. number one, any thought boehner didn't believe he had more control over his conference this time than he did two years ago should be set aside. cantor and mccarthy having his back. he only has to worry if somebody is high profile were somehow to challenge his standing with house republicans. that's not the case. they were in concert on this. does it mean -- send a signal to the white house that this time what boehner says and negotiates goes though it may not
